The data controller for this website and associated footage is:

  • Name: Chris Turnbull, trading as Tarmac Tapes

  • Email: [email protected]
  • ICO Registration: [ICO_REG_NUMBER]

Tarmac Tapes is operated as a sole trader. All data-related enquiries should be directed to the contact details above.

What We Record

Tarmac Tapes records dashcam video footage of public roads and highways in the United Kingdom. Footage is captured from a vehicle-mounted camera while driving on public roads.

Footage may incidentally capture:

  • Other vehicles and their registration plates
  • Pedestrians and cyclists visible from the road
  • Road infrastructure, signage, and the surrounding environment
  • Audio of road conditions (where audio recording is enabled)
All recording takes place on public roads in plain sight. No recording occurs on private property without permission.

Why We Record It

Footage is captured for the purpose of commercial distribution via:

  • Stock footage platforms (royalty-free licensing)
  • Social media channels (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Rumble, X)
  • Viral licensing platforms (Newsflare, ViralHog) for incident footage of journalistic or public-interest value

Tarmac Tapes relies on the following lawful bases under the UK GDPR:

  • Legitimate interests — for general commercial dashcam operation, stock footage production, and social media content. Footage is captured on public roads where there is a reasonable expectation that cameras may be present.
  • Journalistic / public interest exemption — for incident footage submitted to Newsflare or ViralHog, where the footage has genuine news or public-interest value (e.g. road incidents, near-misses, dangerous driving). Such footage is submitted unblurred only to those platforms under this exemption.

How Long We Keep It

  • Raw footage — deleted within 7 days of the weekly processing sprint. Footage that is not selected for further use is not retained.
  • Keeper clips — clips selected for stock, social, or archive use are retained indefinitely in encrypted cloud storage.
  • Unblurred viral clips — submitted to Newsflare or ViralHog for licensing review. Deleted from local storage once the clip has either been sold or declined by the licensing platform.

Blurring & Anonymisation

All stock footage and social media content published by Tarmac Tapes has faces and vehicle registration plates automatically blurred using Boris FX software before publication.

Unblurred footage is submitted only to Newsflare and ViralHog under the journalistic / public interest exemption. These platforms operate their own data handling and licensing agreements.

If you believe footage featuring you has been published without appropriate anonymisation, please contact us immediately using the details below.

Audio Recording

Audio recording is disabled by default on all dashcam equipment used by Tarmac Tapes.

Audio is enabled only on individual clips where road sound (e.g. tyres, horns, ambient traffic) adds editorial or contextual value to the footage. In-vehicle audio and conversation is not recorded.

Third Parties

Footage may be shared with or distributed through the following third-party platforms. Each platform operates under its own privacy policy and terms of service.

  • Adobe Stock
  • Shutterstock
  • Pond5
  • Dreamstime
  • Depositphotos
  • Newsflare
  • ViralHog
  • YouTube
  • TikTok
  • Instagram
  • Rumble
  • Ko-fi

No footage or personal data is sold to third parties for advertising or profiling purposes.
